AMD Powers Efficient Datacenters: Comparing Power Consumption
When server efficiency matters, it's not enough to compare spec sheets. AMD delivers power efficiency at three real-world workloads
Watch the video

Platform Configuration Details
AMD Opteron™ Processor-based Platform 2 x Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors Model 2380 in Supermicro 2021M-UR+,16GB (8x2GB DDR2 memory), 1 x 500GB Western Digital WD5000ABPS SATA II disk drive, Ablecom PWS-702A-1R power supply, SuSE Linux® Enterprise Server 10 SP2 (64-bit, kernel 2.6.16.60-0.21), Dynamic Power Profile Enabled

Intel Xeon Processor-based System
2 x Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors Model L5440 in Supermicro 6025W-NTR+, 16GB (8x2GB low power FBDIMM memory), 1 x 500GB Western Digital WD5000ABPS SATA II disk drive, Ablecom PWS-702A-1R power supply, SuSE Linux® Enterprise Server 10 SP2 (64-bit, kernel 2.6.16.60-0.21), Dynamic Power Profile Enabled

Workload Details
SPECpower_ssj™2008 was used as the workload. SPEC and the benchmark name SPECpower_ssj are trademarks of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation. Relative benchmark & measured power results stated above reflect results published on http://www.spec.org as of November 05, 2008. Energy Cost Calculation Details

  • Examples assume platforms operating for 3 years, at 100% load point, or 30% load point, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year plus an additional 60% representing energy consumption to cool the servers
  • Calculation of energy cost is based on $.10 per kWh
  • Calculation of energy cost comparisons assume a 42U rack containing 20 total servers operating for 3 years
  • Platform-level power measurements displayed and used in deriving energy consumption costs were obtained using publicly available platforms outlined in the platform configuration details

The energy cost calculation is theoretical in nature and is not intended to provide precise figures. Rather, the calculation is intended to provide a theoretical, estimated representation of money spent to operate and cool measured platforms based on the assumptions set forth above. AMD cannot and does not guarantee that any particular person or business will save money by using the AMD Opteron™ processor given the multitude of variables involved that are unique to the platform and each end user.
